On Tuesday 11th November, Platanos fell silent to remember those who fought, and continue to fight, for freedoms, justice, diversity and human rights in conflicts around the world.
Our act of remembrance was led by our cadets on parade. Senior cadet Asma Mohammed Ali, who led the event shared, ‘it was an honour to be able to lead and participate in an event that remembers so much of what people have done to allow me the opportunities I have today’. Our focus this year was on the role that people from so many different nations, backgrounds, genders and cultures played in the first world war. Year 8 student, Leandro Henrique, who laid the reef for Year 8 along with Maria Figueira Pestana said, ‘Remembering with all of my year group was a great experience. Sometimes I forget what other people have done in the past for me. Being able to lay a symbol of remembrance was a brilliant reminder’.
Remembrance is an important act manifesting itself in many ways in cultures and communities around the world. As part our focus on remembrance this week, all students have also had assemblies where we have learnt about how countries such as Japan and Mexico remember loved ones helping communities build collective memories, express grief and reinforce shared identities.
The rain held off and the maturity and respect from our students shone through.
