Good Schools Guide Award, 13th July 2015

 

Platanos College has today been awarded the Good Schools Guide Award 2015. The award is in recognition of the school's consistent performance and excellent teaching in comparison to schools across the country.

The award is based on calculations by the Good Schools Guide, the largest independent guide to UK schools.

 

Minute's silence to pay our respects, 3rd July 2015

 

The entire school, as with the rest of the UK, held a minute's silence at midday to remember those who lost their lives in the events in Tunisia. It was also a solemn opportunity to continue to inform pupils of the impact of global events and the values of peace and tolerance.

 

Our Junior NBA Basketball champions in BBC filming, 26th June 2015

 

Our Platanos basketball players, including members of the team who won the Junior England NBA Basketball league earlier this year, took part in an invited exhibition match this week and filmed by the BBC Match of the Day.

Air gliding trip at Lasham Airfield, 15th June 2015

 

Platanos pupils had the exciting opportunity to attend a trip to Lasham Airfield where they learnt about engineering and aviation and piloted a flight in a glider.

RISE fund-raising challenge, 2nd June 2015

 

We are proud to announce our pupils taking part in the RISE (Rural India School Enterprise) Challenge has raised a total of £255.43 for the RISE charity 'Yearn To Learn' literacy programme for our partner school in west Bengal. A very well done!

In a closely contested enterprise competition, Team Upcloud raised the most funds and will now represent Platanos College in the HSBC Dragons' Den national final this term. Many congratulations to Team Upcloud!

  

BBC Story Writing Competition, 22nd May 2015

 

One of our pupils, Joanna Byrne (Year 7), entered the BBC Radio 2 Story Writing 2015 Competition earlier this term and achieved great success. Joanna wrote a short story entitled "Death Camp Diary". Her story was based on her study at school of the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Being a national competition, there were over 200,000 entries. Of this number, Joanna was placed 30th overall - a magnificent achievement!

  

IntoUniversity 'Business in Focus' programme, 18th May 2015

 

As part of the school’s IntoUniversity partnership programme, our Year 10 pupils attended a ‘Business in Focus’ day, centred on an enterprise challenge. The programme took place at the impressive Burberry headquarters.

Mock General Election, 4th May 2015

 

With the UK General Election fast approaching and the heightened interest and debating taking place, Platanos College hosted a mock election on Friday 1st May for the entire school.

The mock election was an exciting event demonstrating the democratic process and raising awareness amongst pupils of the General Election on the 7th May.

RISE fund-raising challenge, 24th April 2015

 

Our pupils are taking part in the RISE (Rural India School Enterprise) Challenge once again this year.

After the first round of the enterprise challenge, Team Upcloud made a net profit of £51.44 and Team Enterprise made £69.16. In total, £120.60 has so far been raised for the RISE charity 'Yearn To Learn' literacy programme for our partner school in west Bengal.

Well done and keep up the good work.

Platanos College one of the best in the country for pupil progress at GCSE, 23rd March 2015

 

Platanos College has just received national recognition for the value it adds to pupils' achievement at GCSE by the independent organisation SSAT.

Platanos College crowned Junior NBA Basketball England League Champions by NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo!

We are extremely proud to announce that Platanos College were crowned champions of the inaugural Junior NBA Basketball England League today!

The trophy was presented by NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, with the winners of the competition receiving exclusive invitations to an official dinner with NBA legends and VIP tickets to the NBA global games at the O2 arena!

A magnificent achievement for our basketball team! Well done!

Art exhibition at the Tate South Lambeth, 13th January 2015

 

The Tate South Lambeth is currently holding an exhibition of Platanos pupils' art work entitled 'Portraits'. The selected art work is now open to the public.

Platanos College rated 'Outstanding' in all aspects by Ofsted, 9th January 2015

 

We are pleased to announce that following an Ofsted inspection in December 2014 (report published January 2015), Platanos College was rated 'Outstanding' in all aspects by Ofsted.

This is the third successive 'Outstanding' rating awarded to the school and is a wonderful recognition of the entire school community under the extremely high expectations of the new Ofsted framework.

Platanos in the Junior NBA semi-finals, 8th January 2015

 

We are delighted that our talented basketball team has made it through to the Junior NBA semi-finals this week!  The all important semi-finals and final will take place next week, attended by NBA legends including Dikembe Mutumbo.

Spring term begins, 2nd January 2015

 

We would like to wish all parents, carers and pupils a happy and productive new year.

The new term begins on Monday 5th January 2015. We look forward to seeing all pupils back on Monday.

 

Charity fund-raising, 12th December 2014

 

Our pupil-led Charity Commitee in partnership with our Girl Guides and Scouts embarked on a fund-raising campaign this week. Items including food and warm clothing were collected and a cake sale was organised in order to raise money for charities for the homeless.

Over £100 in total was raised. All donations will be given to the charities Brixton Soup Kitchen and Crisis. A big thank you to all those that contributed!

End of term activities, 1st December 2014

 

Our end-of-term programme of activities begin towards the end of this term. As a result, there will be disruption to normal lessons.

The exciting activities include educational trips to enhance learning, revision workshops, parents' evenings, Awards Evenings, the Grammar School Pathway exams, the Christmas Concert and Theatre Production, CHABOP Day and many others. Click here for dates.

 

Skills London 2014 at the Excel Centre, 18th November 2014

 

Our Year 11 pupils will be attending a trip to the Skills London 2014 event on Friday. Skills London 2014 is the biggest jobs and careers event of the year. Supported by the Mayor of London, Skills London offers the opportunity to interact with some of the best names in employment, education and training in a highly interactive environment.

Two of our Equality Champions delivered thought-provoking speeches to the entire school community on the topic of Equality and Diverstiy, a focus for the whole school assembly this week.

'Preventing extremism' training, 5th November 2014

 

Reflecting on the current affairs taking place in the UK and globally, a training workshop was delivered to staff on preventing extremism and radicalisation by the Lambeth Prevent Programme, which is part of the national strategy.

Chinese Mandarin classes at Platanos, 6th October 2014

 

We are delighted that this academic year, the school has been able to introduce Chinese Mandarin extra-curricular classes for pupils at Platanos College.

The language is widely spoken with over a billion speakers. This programme offers our school community an opportunity to learn about one of the world's fastest-growing economies.
