On Tuesday 30th January, 12 students, comprising four Year 7s and eight Year 8s, represented Platanos College’s Youth Travel Ambassador (YTA) programme at the Roots and Shoots venue in Kennington.

Fuellers' Academic Lecture Series, 26th January 2018

On Monday 22nd January, an exciting new specialist academic lecture series began here at Platanos College with a lecture examining ‘What is it like to have a career in the energy industry?’ This was the start of a sequence of lectures which will take place every week until the end of the Spring term.

Urban Debate League Round 1, 24th January 2018

The first round of the Urban Debate League took place yesterday as Notre Dame RC Girls' School played host to a variety of South London debate teams.

The Brothers Size at The Old Vic, 23rd January 2018

A group of Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils went to see the absorbing drama at The Old Vic last night. From the writer of Moonlight, the 2017 Academy Award winner for Best Picture, ritual and reality intertwine in this darkly sparkling, brilliant play.

The Mayor of London launches equality campaign with Platanos College pupils, 19th December 2017
Platanos College pupils took part in a major campaign launch with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and the Fawcett Society to mark the centenary of the first women in the UK securing the right to vote.

Dr. Who at the IMAX Science Museum, 15th December 2017

Year 8 pupils from Platanos College were invited to attend an exclusive screening of the Christmas episode of Dr. Who at the IMAX Science Museum just before the end of term. Pupils got to meet and interview the show's writer and producer, Steven Moffat,as part of the BBC School report.

On Wednesday, a selection of our Year 8 Music pupils were given an introduction to musical theatre when they ventured to see a live west end show.

Our Year 9 pupils had an opportunity to receive coaching from the England Rugby Football Union at The Black Prince Trust Hub recently.

Charity Committee Poppy Appeal, 14th November 2017

A special thank you to our members of the Charity Committee and the Uniform Service Groups for their tremendous efforts in the 2017 Poppy Appeal. Throughout the week our pupils were out fundraising during lunchtimes and after school in local shops.

Tycoons in School, 10th November 2017

Tycoons in School is a free national enterprise competition spearheaded by Peter Jones CBE, entrepreneur and star of Dragons' Den, which gives young people the chance to run their own business. This is the second year that Platanos College has been successful in the participation of the Tycoons in School Programme.

Doctors in Training, 9th November 2017

Students from King's College London came to speak to Year 8 and Year 11 pupils about the process of becoming a doctor. Pupils learnt about the demands of studying medicine and were able to experience hands on how to suture wounds, take blood and monitor blood pressure. As many of our pupils have high aspirations, this was a very informative session for them and gave the pupils an insight into life as a medical student.

History Month, 20th October 2017

In October, students at Platanos College celebrated History Month. This was an exciting whole school project focused on diversity and multiculturalism through looking at historical events and people that have become part of the rich tapestry of Britain. This year the theme was ‘Celebrating Diversity’, with a particular focus on the influence of migration throughout history – a theme we feel is particularly important to London and our local community.

Formal Examinations, Autumn Term

Formal examinations for Year 8, 9 and 10 pupils will begin after our half term break. Year 10 examination begin on Monday 13th November, Year 9 on Monday 20th November and Year 8 on Monday 27th November. Each year group will have a week of examinations.

Year 11 Parents' Evening and Careers Fair, 18th October 2017
On Wednesday 18th October 2017, the school held its first Year 11 Parents’ Evening of the year combined with our annual Careers Fair. Over 15 sixth forms and colleges attended along with some of our ex-pupils who came along to speak to our current parents/pupils about further education transition.

National Poetry Day at Platanos College, 13th October 2017
We celebrated National Poetry Day on the 28th of September by hosting a poetry competition for our KS3 pupils. The pupils explored this year's theme of 'Freedom' and produced some outstanding poetry.

Building links with St. Dunstan's College, 11th October 2017

We are proud to have a long standing relationship with the armed services of St Dunstan’s College, a co-educational independent school in Catford. The school’s uniformed services help to build pupil confidence, lifelong skills, community involvement and a team ethos.

Platanos College is very pleased to announce that we will be looking to further strengthen and extend our relationship following a very productive meeting when Ms Taybi and Mr Bourke met with St Dunstan’s College last Thursday. This will seek to expand the capacity of our pupils in joining the army and sea cadets from September 2018.


Anti-Bullying Ambassadors at Platanos College, 10th October 2017
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are returning this year as part of our extensive Leadership Programme. Pupils are chosen each year to be champions of the Anti-Bullying agenda running at Platanos College.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Theatre Trip, 9th October 2017
Our very fortunte Drama pupils went to see a ballet performance of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on Monday 9th October in The Royal Opera House. For most of the pupils, it was their first time at the ballet and they were enchanted by the music, costumes and staging.

On Monday 9th October, we welcomed the return of our House Assemblies. This was the first time our Year 7 pupils experienced a House Assembly and they fully enjoyed the lively atmosphere and friendly competition that these events bring to the school.

What Career? Live, 6th October 2017

On Friday 6th October, a selection of Year 11 pupils attended a ‘What Career Live?’ event at London Olympia. This event gave pupils the opportunity to consider their postschool options such as apprenticeships, internships, full-time/part-time work, gap year opportunities and undergraduate courses all under one roof. It was a unique chance to meet with some of the UK’s top employers and put questions to universities.

The Worshipful Company of Fuellers visit Platanos College, 6th October 2017
On Thursday 6th October, Mr Goldsmith, Ms Andrews Jones and Mr Walworth from The Worshipful Company of Fuellers, visited Platanos College to meet with some of our pupils. The pupils discussed their current interests and future careers and they made suggestions about how The Worshipful Company of Fuellers could help to bring in key speakers to talk to them about what ‘work life’ is really like. We are very grateful for the consistent support from the Worship company of Fuellers and we look forward to compiling our professional external speakers programme later on in the academic year.


Year 9 Leadership Roles, 5th October 2017

Pupils at Platanos College are encouraged to develop leadership skills by participating in one of our many leadership programmes. Recently, elections for Class Presidents and Vice Presidents took place and Junior Leaders were appointed.

Spanish Podcast Club, 4th October 2017

Yesterday, Tuesday 4th October, the Spanish Podcast Club reunited for a second year. This year we are very excited to create and record more episodes for our Platanos Spanish Podcast that will cover more topics from the KS3 curriculum.

This is a great opportunity for the students to boost their oral skills in Spanish as well as their presentation skills. In these sessions, they will have the opportunity to speak more and improve their vocabulary and grammar knowledge. The Club will run on Tuesdays from 3.15 to 4.15 and it is aimed at Year 8 and 9 pupils.

If your son or daughter has not received an invitation letter but they would like to attend, please ask them to come to see Ms. Calvo at the MFL office or 1D12 this week as we have still some spaces available.

Young Playwrights sessions continue, 3rd October 2017

Our group of Young Playwrights had another session with a professional playwright yesterday which focused on sharing creative ideas and developing presentation skills. This will continue over the next six months and the pupils involved are excited about future sessions.

Othello at The Ambassadors Theatre, 26th September 2017

On Tuesday 26th September, Year 11 Drama pupils went to see a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello. This electrifying take on Shakespeare’s thriller of paranoia, jealousy and murder left pupils breathless.

On Thursday 21st September, a group of KS4 pupils went to see Arthur Kopit’s tremendously powerful Broadway hit, 'Wings', which has not been seen in London for 30 years.

Year 6 Open Evening, 20th September 2017

A warm welcome was extended to both parents/carers and pupils who attended the Platanos College Year 6 Open Evening on Wednesday 20th September. Parents/carers and their children were invited to the school to take a tour of the facilities, discover the variety of subjects on offer and meet current pupils and staff.

Young Playwrights at Platanos College, 20th September 2017

On Tuesday 19th September we held our first Young Playwrights session where five Most Able students, selected through a writing competition last term, were invited to work with a professional playwright in developing their own work. Over the next six months, the students will be coached by professionals, see interesting productions and eventually shape their own short plays which will be performed by professional actors on the London stage! This is such a fantastic opportunity for our students and we wish them well with this exciting project.

Blue Stockings theatre trip, 7th September 2017

Our Year 11 Drama students kicked off the year with a trip to see a performance of Blue Stockings in Stanley Halls, Norwood. The play centres on Cambridge University's first women students and their struggle to be allowed to graduate. Pupils were left astonished at the prejudices the pioneers of women's education had to overcome.
