Charity Committee Poppy Appeal, 14th November 2017

A special thank you to our members of the Charity Committee and the Uniform Service Groups for their tremendous efforts in the 2017 Poppy Appeal. Throughout the week our pupils were out fundraising during lunchtimes and after school in local shops.

Tycoons in School, 10th November 2017

Tycoons in School is a free national enterprise competition spearheaded by Peter Jones CBE, entrepreneur and star of Dragons' Den, which gives young people the chance to run their own business. This is the second year that Platanos College has been successful in the participation of the Tycoons in School Programme.

Doctors in Training, 9th November 2017

Students from King's College London came to speak to Year 8 and Year 11 pupils about the process of becoming a doctor. Pupils learnt about the demands of studying medicine and were able to experience hands on how to suture wounds, take blood and monitor blood pressure. As many of our pupils have high aspirations, this was a very informative session for them and gave the pupils an insight into life as a medical student.

History Month, October 2017

In October, students at Platanos College celebrated History Month. This was an exciting whole school project focused on diversity and multiculturalism through looking at historical events and people that have become part of the rich tapestry of Britain. This year the theme was ‘Celebrating Diversity’, with a particular focus on the influence of migration throughout history – a theme we feel is particularly important to London and our local community.

Formal Examinations, Autumn Term

Formal examinations for Year 8, 9 and 10 pupils will begin after our half term break. Year 10 examination begin on Monday 13th November, Year 9 on Monday 20th November and Year 8 on Monday 27th November. Each year group will have a week of examinations.

Year 11 Parents' Evening and Careers Fair, 18th October 2017
On Wednesday 18th October 2017, the school held its first Year 11 Parents’ Evening of the year combined with our annual Careers Fair. Over 15 sixth forms and colleges attended along with some of our ex-pupils who came along to speak to our current parents/pupils about further education transition.

National Poetry Day at Platanos College, 13th October 2017
We celebrated National Poetry Day on the 28th of September by hosting a poetry competition for our KS3 pupils. The pupils explored this year's theme of 'Freedom' and produced some outstanding poetry.

Building links with St. Dunstan's College, 11th October 2017

We are proud to have a long standing relationship with the armed services of St Dunstan’s College, a co-educational independent school in Catford. The school’s uniformed services help to build pupil confidence, lifelong skills, community involvement and a team ethos.

Platanos College is very pleased to announce that we will be looking to further strengthen and extend our relationship following a very productive meeting when Ms Taybi and Mr Bourke met with St Dunstan’s College last Thursday. This will seek to expand the capacity of our pupils in joining the army and sea cadets from September 2018.


Anti-Bullying Ambassadors at Platanos College, 10th October 2017
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are returning this year as part of our extensive Leadership Programme. Pupils are chosen each year to be champions of the Anti-Bullying agenda running at Platanos College.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Theatre Trip, 9th October 2017
Our very fortunte Drama pupils went to see a ballet performance of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on Monday 9th October in The Royal Opera House. For most of the pupils, it was their first time at the ballet and they were enchanted by the music, costumes and staging.

On Monday 9th October, we welcomed the return of our House Assemblies. This was the first time our Year 7 pupils experienced a House Assembly and they fully enjoyed the lively atmosphere and friendly competition that these events bring to the school.

What Career? Live, 6th October 2017

On Friday 6th October, a selection of Year 11 pupils attended a ‘What Career Live?’ event at London Olympia. This event gave pupils the opportunity to consider their postschool options such as apprenticeships, internships, full-time/part-time work, gap year opportunities and undergraduate courses all under one roof. It was a unique chance to meet with some of the UK’s top employers and put questions to universities.

The Worshipful Company of Fuellers visit Platanos College, 6th October 2017
On Thursday 6th October, Mr Goldsmith, Ms Andrews Jones and Mr Walworth from The Worshipful Company of Fuellers, visited Platanos College to meet with some of our pupils. The pupils discussed their current interests and future careers and they made suggestions about how The Worshipful Company of Fuellers could help to bring in key speakers to talk to them about what ‘work life’ is really like. We are very grateful for the consistent support from the Worship company of Fuellers and we look forward to compiling our professional external speakers programme later on in the academic year.


Year 9 Leadership Roles, 5th October 2017

Pupils at Platanos College are encouraged to develop leadership skills by participating in one of our many leadership programmes. Recently, elections for Class Presidents and Vice Presidents took place and Junior Leaders were appointed.

Spanish Podcast Club, 4th October 2017

Yesterday, Tuesday 4th October, the Spanish Podcast Club reunited for a second year. This year we are very excited to create and record more episodes for our Platanos Spanish Podcast that will cover more topics from the KS3 curriculum.

This is a great opportunity for the students to boost their oral skills in Spanish as well as their presentation skills. In these sessions, they will have the opportunity to speak more and improve their vocabulary and grammar knowledge. The Club will run on Tuesdays from 3.15 to 4.15 and it is aimed at Year 8 and 9 pupils.

If your son or daughter has not received an invitation letter but they would like to attend, please ask them to come to see Ms. Calvo at the MFL office or 1D12 this week as we have still some spaces available.

Young Playwrights sessions continue, 3rd October 2017

Our group of Young Playwrights had another session with a professional playwright yesterday which focused on sharing creative ideas and developing presentation skills. This will continue over the next six months and the pupils involved are excited about future sessions.

Othello at The Ambassadors Theatre, 26th September 2017

On Tuesday 26th September, Year 11 Drama pupils went to see a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello. This electrifying take on Shakespeare’s thriller of paranoia, jealousy and murder left pupils breathless.

On Thursday 21st September, a group of KS4 pupils went to see Arthur Kopit’s tremendously powerful Broadway hit, 'Wings', which has not been seen in London for 30 years.

Year 6 Open Evening, 20th September 2017

A warm welcome was extended to both parents/carers and pupils who attended the Platanos College Year 6 Open Evening on Wednesday 20th September. Parents/carers and their children were invited to the school to take a tour of the facilities, discover the variety of subjects on offer and meet current pupils and staff.

Young Playwrights at Platanos College, 20th September 2017

On Tuesday 19th September we held our first Young Playwrights session where five Most Able students, selected through a writing competition last term, were invited to work with a professional playwright in developing their own work. Over the next six months, the students will be coached by professionals, see interesting productions and eventually shape their own short plays which will be performed by professional actors on the London stage! This is such a fantastic opportunity for our students and we wish them well with this exciting project.

Blue Stockings theatre trip, 7th September 2017

Our Year 11 Drama students kicked off the year with a trip to see a performance of Blue Stockings in Stanley Halls, Norwood. The play centres on Cambridge University's first women students and their struggle to be allowed to graduate. Pupils were left astonished at the prejudices the pioneers of women's education had to overcome.

Parade Day, 11th July 2017

Our annual parade day this year was a spectacular occasion and our largest to date. On parade were our Army Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides and St John Ambulance Cadets as the school shared in the celebration of our cadets' achievements.

The prestigious awards were presented by our distinguished guests from the Worshipful Company of Fuellers.

Last week, our Year 10 pupils attended joint History and English department trips to the London Dungeons and Jack the Ripper Tours. The trips were a great success with an exciting mixture of fun facts, fright, and insight for their GCSE studies.

Speak Up! Hyde Park Debating Champions, 16th June 2017

Platanos College pupils competed in the Speak Up! Hyde Park Debating Challenge in the historic surroundings of Speakers' Corner, Hyde Park. Our pupils competed against 20 of the top teams through three rounds.

It was a captivating debate in the final round and after careful deliberation, the judges selected Platanos College as the 2017 Speak Up! Hyde Park Debating champions!

Platanos College receives three Educational Outcomes awards from the SSAT, 17th May 2017

We are delighted that Platanos College has received national recognition for its exceptional pupil achievement, making it one of the top schools in the country.

Data analysis from official statistics show that Platanos College is in the top 10% nationally for pupil progress and top 20% for pupil attainment. Additionally, the college has received an award for its success in achieving high levels of performance for pupils eligible for the pupil premium. 

This is the third successive year the college has received an SSAT award in recognition of its high performance.

Speak Out Challenge Regional Final, 12th May 2017

Our Year 10 pupil, Chukwudindu Okoli, represented Platanos College in the absorbing regional final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge 2017. A very well done to Chukwudindu Okoli who performed extremely well throughout the competition.

The Hyde Park Debating Challenge, 5th May 2017

On Thursday a selection of our most able Year 8 and 9 pupils attended the launch event of Speak Up! - The Hyde Park Debating Challenge. The visit included an interactive workshop and tour of Hyde Park and Speakers' Corner in preparation for the school competition in Hyde Park this June.

Google Expeditions Workshop, 24th April 2017

The highly exciting Google Expeditions workshop took place last Friday with over 20 classes from different year groups taking part. 

Each pupil received a Google Virtual Reality Headset and journeyed all over the globe and back in time to witness some of the most amazing things up close.

The Big Debate, 20th April 2017

This week Platanos College pupils were the lucky attendees of a show debate at The Royal Institute with some very special guests.

The pupils had the opportunity to meet some inspiring people including newscaster Jon Snow, Academy Award winning actress Emma Thompson, and Bill Gates, who made a surprse visit to deliver a speech and a question and answer session.

Platanos College congratulated by the Minister of State for School Standards, 13th March 2017

We are delighted that Platanos College has recently been recognised by the Minister of State for School Standards, Nick Gibb MP, for its exceptional achievement. 

Platanos College was congratulated for the high levels of progress its pupils made between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE). 

The recent national league tables indicated that Platanos College is amongst the top schools in the country for pupil progress and for the percentage of pupils entering the core academic subjects (the English Baccalaureate subjects).

We are extremely proud of the hard work and exceptional achievement of our pupils and staff.

Theatre workshop for able pupils, 10th January 2017

Our recent theatre workshop on the 9th January for our most able pupils in Key Stage 3 was a very successful and challenging production for the pupils. They attended Southwark Playhouse to study Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” and impressed everyone.

The London South Bank was alive with dancing dragons, lions and the sound of beating drums as Platanos College pupils helped initiate the festivities for the Chinese New Year as part of the school's cultural programme.

The Guardian children's reading project, 16th December 2016

Our new reading project was launched this week following the announcement of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and shortlist of books. The group will be studying and reading the shortlisted books over the holidays and will look forward to the winning author Alex Wheatle's visit in the new term.

Debate Mate programme, 21st November 2016

It has been a good start for the Debating Club this year with several new members joining from different year groups across the school. Following the half term, our Debate Mate mentors officially began the Debate Mate programme and pupils have grasped the skills much more quickly than expected. The Club is looking forward to their first competition in the Urban Debate League in January where they have done well in previous years.

Successful bid for the Tycoon in Schools business project, 
20th October 2016

We are delighted that a group of our Year 7 pupils were successul in their bid for the Tycoon in Schools project. The programme is a national enterprise competition launched in 2012 by Peter Jones CBE to encourage pupils to get involved in business. 

The business plan submitted by our pupils in competition with other schools across the country was selected by the programme and has secured a start-up fund for our pupils to run a business in school. A very well done to our pupils.

We are delighted to introduce a new coaching programme and new facilities for table tennis this year. This has been made possible via a successful Jack Petchey Foundation application and will be part of a long term plan to coach pupils to competition level.

Reading books for our new Year 7 pupils, 12th September 2016

Platanos College continued its tradition this year of presenting a new reading book to all new Year 7 pupils as part of the school's continued, long term promotion of reading and literacy.

Platanos pupils are encouraged to develop a love for books from day one and they were thrilled to receive the gifts during a presentation in their first school assembly.

Outstanding GCSE results 2016, 
26th August 2016

Platanos College pupils celebrate their excellent GCSE results this year. 

Over two thirds (73%) achieved 5+ A*-C grades including English and maths and, on average, achieved over half a grade higher in at least 8 subjects when compared to pupils across the country using the new Progress 8 measure.

3rd June 2016

Our Girl Guides took part in the recent Venn Street Market trading project. This project allowed the pupils to experience the process from business and financial planning to production and marketing.

Speak Out Challenge Finals, 14th April 2016

Many congratulations to our two pupils, Nathanael Clarke and Francisco Ferreira, who have been selected to compete in the Speak Out Challenge Finals this term. 

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge is a highly competitive debating/speaking competition in which Platanos pupils have had many recent successes.

Lambeth Achievement Awards, 19th January 2016

We are delighted that many of our Platanos pupils were recipients of the Lambeth Achievement Awards this year. The grand ceremony took place at the Royal Festival Hall and the awards were presented by the Chief Executive of Lambeth Council.

Foundation Awards ceremony, 1st December 2015

The annual Foundation Awards ceremony took place last week and was a wonderful celebration of our pupil's outstanding success and talent in Art, Drama, Technology, PE and Music.

The ceremony was well attended and provided a wonderful showcase of pupils' work during the evening. The key note speech was delivered by our special guest speaker, David Pickering, a performing artist and Education Administrator of the Royal Opera House, with which the school has established educational and career links.

Show My Homework online tool, 16th November 2015

Show My Homework is a website tool to record and monitor pupils’ homework. The school has introduced this online system this term in order to continue to maximise pupils’ learning.

Parents and carers can see and keep track of all the homework set by their teachers by logging into the system using their individual account so that they can better support their children. The system can be accessed via a computer, mobile phone app or tablet device.

Scholarships for Science, Maths, Art, Music, Business and Enterprise, 1st September 2015

Platanos College is introducing new scholarships and bursaries from September 2016.

New pupils applying to join the school in September 2016 will be eligible to apply for scholarships in Science, Maths, Art, Music and Business and Enterprise.

Up to 10% of new Year 7 places for September 2016 will be designated for applicants showing potential or aptitude in Art or Music.

These prestigious scholarships will allow the most able pupils access to additional provision, including extra master classes, tuition and workshops delivered by experts specific to the discipline.

Good Schools Guide Award, 13th July 2015

Platanos College has today been awarded the Good Schools Guide Award 2015. The award is in recognition of the school's consistent performance and excellent teaching in comparison to schools across the country.

The award is based on calculations by the Good Schools Guide, the largest independent guide to UK schools.


Minute's silence to pay our respects, 3rd July 2015

The entire school, as with the rest of the UK, held a minute's silence at midday to remember those who lost their lives in the events in Tunisia. It was also a solemn opportunity to continue to inform pupils of the impact of global events and the values of peace and tolerance.


Our Junior NBA Basketball champions in BBC filming, 26th June 2015

Our Platanos basketball players, including members of the team who won the Junior England NBA Basketball league earlier this year, took part in an invited exhibition match this week and filmed by the BBC Match of the Day.

Air gliding trip at Lasham Airfield, 15th June 2015

Platanos pupils had the exciting opportunity to attend a trip to Lasham Airfield where they learnt about engineering and aviation and piloted a flight in a glider.

RISE fund-raising challenge, 2nd June 2015

We are proud to announce our pupils taking part in the RISE (Rural India School Enterprise) Challenge has raised a total of £255.43 for the RISE charity 'Yearn To Learn' literacy programme for our partner school in west Bengal. A very well done!

In a closely contested enterprise competition, Team Upcloud raised the most funds and will now represent Platanos College in the HSBC Dragons' Den national final this term. Many congratulations to Team Upcloud!


BBC Story Writing Competition, 22nd May 2015

One of our pupils, Joanna Byrne (Year 7), entered the BBC Radio 2 Story Writing 2015 Competition earlier this term and achieved great success. Joanna wrote a short story entitled "Death Camp Diary". Her story was based on her study at school of the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Being a national competition, there were over 200,000 entries. Of this number, Joanna was placed 30th overall - a magnificent achievement!


IntoUniversity 'Business in Focus' programme, 18th May 2015

As part of the school’s IntoUniversity partnership programme, our Year 10 pupils attended a ‘Business in Focus’ day, centred on an enterprise challenge. The programme took place at the impressive Burberry headquarters.

Mock General Election, 4th May 2015

With the UK General Election fast approaching and the heightened interest and debating taking place, Platanos College hosted a mock election on Friday 1st May for the entire school.

After the first round of the enterprise challenge, Team Upcloud made a net profit of £51.44 and Team Enterprise made £69.16. In total, £120.60 has so far been raised for the RISE charity 'Yearn To Learn' literacy programme for our partner school in west Bengal.

Platanos College crowned Junior NBA Basketball England League Champions by NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo!

We are extremely proud to announce that Platanos College were crowned champions of the inaugural Junior NBA Basketball England League today!

The trophy was presented by NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, with the winners of the competition receiving exclusive invitations to an official dinner with NBA legends and VIP tickets to the NBA global games at the O2 arena!

A magnificent achievement for our basketball team! Well done!

Art exhibition at the Tate South Lambeth, 13th January 2015

Platanos College rated 'Outstanding' in all aspects by Ofsted, 9th January 2015


We are pleased to announce that following an Ofsted inspection in December 2014 (report published January 2015), Platanos College was rated 'Outstanding' in all aspects by Ofsted.

This is the third successive 'Outstanding' rating awarded to the school and is a wonderful recognition of the entire school community under the extremely high expectations of the new Ofsted framework.

Platanos in the Junior NBA semi-finals, 8th January 2015

We are delighted that our talented basketball team has made it through to the Junior NBA semi-finals this week!  The all important semi-finals and final will take place next week, attended by NBA legends including Dikembe Mutumbo.

Spring term begins, 2nd January 2015

We would like to wish all parents, carers and pupils a happy and productive new year.

The new term begins on Monday 5th January 2015. We look forward to seeing all pupils back on Monday.


Charity fund-raising, 12th December 2014

Our pupil-led Charity Commitee in partnership with our Girl Guides and Scouts embarked on a fund-raising campaign this week. Items including food and warm clothing were collected and a cake sale was organised in order to raise money for charities for the homeless.

Over £100 in total was raised. All donations will be given to the charities Brixton Soup Kitchen and Crisis. A big thank you to all those that contributed!

End of term activities, 1st December 2014

Our end-of-term programme of activities begin towards the end of this term. As a result, there will be disruption to normal lessons.
